Responsibility

How can we combine being responsible and being not a doer?

The way I put it is that you are the doer. Your body mind organism, what you think you are, is the doer, but you are not the author.

Even understanding and knowing without any doubt that we are not the authors of our actions, we have to face the consequences of our actions. We are responsible in the sense that we can't escape the consequences of our actions.

There is other way to look at it. This body-mind organism which we are is responsible for the action, but the author of the action is this Life Force, Universal Energy. And if we see it like that, it's not a paradox. This body-mind organism does something. I can't deny I have done something. And if it hurt the other, I can't deny it hurt him. It's a consequence.

What makes your heart beat, what makes your digestive system work, your hair grow, your blood flow, what regenerates your skin every night, all the biological process and your brain is not in control of this process. In the foetus the heart starts beating long before the brain actually does.

It's a different timing mechanism, which is totally independent from the brain. But for thousands of years our education system has emphasized our mental intellectual side only and we have forgotten this other parts of our being.

That's why I say come back to the heart, or the body or your energy field and do the exercise where we ask ourselves from these other parts of our being.

We find the answers which are not coming just from the intellect. Intellect would say: how can it be like this? And the body would say: nothing. The heart will say - aaah, quite love that idea. The energy field might say: nothing.

Each question when it's answered and asked in this way from different parts of our being, reveals quite different answers.

The poor little mind that has thought it is in control of everything all this time, sometimes painfully, sometimes very gladly, starts to relax, starts to surrender.

We discover that we have an infinite nature far beyond anything we can conceive or think of. And that knowing is already in you. That knowing is already what you are. And every night when we go to sleep and the mind is not thinking, the ego is not present, we discover that part of ourselves. That's why we like sleeping so much, it rejuvenates us, recharges us.

In dreams, sometimes, we also taste that part of our being when the ego is absent, the I-thought is not present, we are just dreaming, perceiving, aware of what's happening while we are dreaming.

Then when we wake up in the morning, for a few seconds there is awareness of what's happening. The mental stories have not started, the I thought has not come back, and the minute, the second when the I-thought come back, "I am, I am the story, I am this belief", governs our live and makes us suffering.

It's really quite simple, we are changing the program, we are changing the conditioning which has resulted in this suffering that we are experiencing this life, it's very simple, and when we change the program, when we change the conditioning, we discover this infinite being that we are, we know this infinite being that we are.

The beautiful thing is that this realization can happen in any moment to anybody. It doesn't require a practice, it doesn't even require coming to Satsang.
